In book nine, Odysseus and his men are sailing safely away from the Cyclopes’s island, Odysseus taunts the Cyclops in a cocky manner and tells him his actual name. Not only did this basically tell the Cyclopes where Odysseus and his ship is, but also could have easily gotten all of his men killed. This can be seen in book nine, Odysseus boasted “Cyclops’/ if any man on the face of the earth should ask you/ who blinded you, shamed you so-say Odysseus,/ raider of cities, he gouged out your eye,/ Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca” (IX. 558-562).
