Hero vs Hero
There are many people in the world that can be portrayed as a hero, but what really is a hero. The dictionary states that a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” In the book The Odyssey, Odysseus was portrayed as the hero who saved everyone from the trojan war. Another hero who saves people and cares about others and not just himself is Iron man from the movie Iron Man(2008,2010,2013). Both of these heroes put their life on the line to help others, and they both have to face personal challenges that changes both of their lives tremendously.

For example, in The Odyssey, the main hero, Odysseus, has to face many difficult choices in order to get to his home in Ithaca. One of the most tiring choices that Odysseus has to make is deciding whether to pass Scylla or Charybdis.…

For Odysseus, this was his endpoint as well as his goal, both of which would not happen simultaneously. As Odysseus reached his endpoint, his goal wasn't exactly achieved. In many respects Homers “Odyssey” the genesis of Western literary folklore Odyesseus serves as the vehicle of Homer’s story and more over is portrayed as a character that is “godlike”, having both mortal and immortal qualities. Although Odysseus actions blur the lines of mortal and God with all his heuristic deeds and characteristics there is still quite a distinction between both beings. While Odyesseus is fast, inventive, heroic and all other various things that make up a God, we can see very human qualities in him as well. He is often moved to tears, makes mistakes and he tends to loose his temper. As he plays a hero throughout the book, he continues to take on countless human roles like a carpenter, sailor, and a beggar etc. Where as Gods can just conjure up a boat he has to makes one with his bare hands.…

Odysseus’ Heroism Many films, TV shows, and books portray their protagonists as heroes, but what makes them heroic? Heroes should be compassionate, humble, and put others before themselves. In Homer’s epic work, The Odyssey, it is debatable whether or not the protagonist can be considered a “hero” in today’s time. When the epic was written in Ancient Greece, Odysseus’ actions were acceptable and even expected. With today’s definition, he would not be considered a hero because of his pride and selfishness.…

Ashure Ashe says that, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge surpass all other at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost” (1).Heroes today are not people who can defeat cyclops, or survive three headed monsters, or try to fight off giants like the protagonist of the Odyssey, Odysseus. Heroes today are people do good deeds not for their own personal gain, but for the good of others. The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus and adventures his to different places, his many battles, and his many choices and the Greeks see him as a great hero. But the reasons why he fought many battles, went to the different places and made the choices he made, makes him by today’s definition of a hero, not a hero.…

The 20 year journey and all of the obstacles he faced while at sea is the main help that developed the character Odysseus. I mean over a 20 year time period he faced a cyclopes, lotus eaters, Calypso and many more. Some people may say that the goal of getting home is what creates him as a character, I say that all he went through and how he dealt with it is what makes him a great character. Hubris, another word for excessive self pride, is frequently a struggle that is faced by Odysseus when consulting the gods or any other threatening forces. Eventually Odysseus is able to overcome his hubris when he realizes that the gods are ultimately on his side after all. At this point he comes to the realization that the gods control his life; “It is no hard thing for the gods of heaven to glorify a man or bring him low" (Book XVI, 250-251). As one can see, Odysseus experiences a mental change in which he sees the world in different way than he did previously. In addition, his true transformation takes place when he realizes the gods place in society as opposed to his own; ““My life runs on then as the gods have spun it.”…
