PERSUASIVE ESSAY ON SOCIAL NETWORKING: CON

In today’s society, billions of people across the world are accessing the internet multiple times a day. Why wouldn’t they? Many people have the internet on their smart phones, and at the touch of a button can check their email, their Facebook, their bank account balance, movie times, you name it. One of these things, however, usually consumes more of the user’s time than the others. Yes, you guessed it: Facebook. Any social networking site or application, actually, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, or something similar, seems to easily suck up hours of a person’s day. Social networking certainly has no benefits to those who are trying to get work done at school or at their jobs. One final reason that social networking is problematic is that causes people to only talk to each other online rather than in person. How many times have you witnessed a group of friends who were supposed to be “hanging out,” but all of them were really just on their phones checking statuses? Or perhaps you’ve been at the dinner table with your family and everybody is on their phone or tablet sending a “tweet” to somebody or looking through someone’s photo albums? When people are on these sites, they are ignoring one another. Furthermore, people often use these sites to escape confrontation or to substitute really spending time with one another. Men and women can take the easy way out of breaking up a relationship by doing it on Facebook, or friends may simply unfriend someone they don’t want to talk to anymore rather than explaining in person why they are mad. Friends may also not feel the need to hang out with one another because they can just see what the person is up to by checking their profiles rather than catching up over lunch. It’s ironic that a website invented to make people more “social” has actually made people more isolated from one another.
