It was March 9th,1959, the day little girls lives were about to be changed by this figure of plastic that is used for play. Barbara Millicent “Barbie” Roberts, a doll with a mind of her own, at the time of its release, Barbie became many girls inspirations, as she was intended to do so."My whole philosophy of Barbie was that, through the doll, the girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices " (Ruth Handler “Creator of Barbie,”barbie.com) Barbie comes from a long line of different ages, genders, careers, and hair and skin tones. When talked about Barbie, many picture long legs, long blonde hair, blue eyes, unrealistic waist, and a whole lot of spunk, but not much variation. For over 50 years Mattel never really saw the need for change in barbie's shape. In the past Ruth Handler has said that her creation was inspired by a German doll names Bild Lilli, which was based on a comic strip. The Bild Lilli doll was much like Barbie, as she was a working woman, with no interest on needing a man to get what she wanted. She was also blonde, just like the signature Barbie doll. The barbies included The signature barbie look, but was african american (2009), the petite barbie, tall barbie, and curvy barbie. Many of the adults didn’t realize a difference in the tall and petite barbie until they were told, but admittedly were drawn to curvy barbie. One lady who is african american was really pleased with african american barbie, but wished it had the curvy barbie. Many of the adult ladies enjoyed the curvy barbie and thought the related to her. They participants from the adults group were pleased with really only curvy barbie, and began to describe what it means for these dolls to not be the classic barbie, they were also pleased with the barbies flat feet. As for the children, many of the young girls were also pleased with curvy barbie, and thought tall barbie was pretty neat. As for the younger boys, they felt bad for saying it but saw curvy barbie as fat, but yet knew that it was okay to look like that. In the end Buzzfeed labeled the adult version a fail, but the outcome of the child version wasn’t terrible.
