When I woke up, I still had that guilty feeling in my stomach. Oh well, how could I fix what I did anyways? While I was thinking about my problem, Cush came by and told me it was time to get my mules ready, so we could deliver supplies to the Yankees. Later on, we got ordered to form into a wagon train and we soon started our journey. After traveling for some time, we arrived at a warehouse, where we had to pick up our supplies. Cush and I had the duty of carrying the kegs of powder, which was the worst thing you could carry. Anyways, we started to load the kegs of powder into our wagon. Because hauling the kegs of powder into the wagon tired me out, I sneaked into the back of the warehouse, where the temperature was cool. I looked around and spotted a pile of Yankee clothes in front of me. …show more content…
While I sat there, a plan began to form in my head. If I dressed up like a Union soldier, I might be able to sneak off without being noticed. I quickly changed into the Union’s uniform. When I went back outside, Cush couldn’t even recognize me in the uniform. By the time he finally recognized me, Cush told me to immediately change back to my original clothes because Captain Bartlett would see me as a spy for sure. The idea seemed brilliant at first, but now it seems stupid. As I walked to where I last saw my clothes, I scolded myself for being so stupid. She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

It was a rainy morning in Seattle, and I wore my Army dress uniform. Stepping off the bus, I ran 100 yards to the entrance of the Airport. It was a rainy Saturday night. I left my dorm, my stomach empty because I’d been trying to wait out the rain before going to find something to eat. But the rain didn’t end, and although it was quite late, I decided to make a quick trip to the store nearby rather than wait any longer. My umbrella was broken, so I put on my hoodie and tried to run as fast as possible. About halfway to the store, I saw an old woman with a folding walker, trying to get past the intersection while holding her umbrella.…

Journal: The Vietnam War What I Knew from the beginning before we had the group discussion is that in the Vietnam War was a fight between the USSR and the Americans in the country of Vietnam. And the result of the war is that the Americans lost. And during the discussion, I learned that in 1963 through 1972 there was a spread of communism. And this resulted in a Truman Doctrine Plan, which is the containment that Truman used to keep the communism from spreading throughout the world. On the other hand, there was a spread of disease that affected the people’s ability to fight, which is called malaria.…

This inability isn’t surprising. Matt had been born and bred in apathy and continued the tradition. He was from a highway town that stayed alive on fast food joints and motels for motorists passing through to get to places more interesting. These towns cling to life on the interstate and they bloom and wilt on the whim of the Federal Highway Commission. In the cars zooming by, his hometown invoked a Midwestern nostalgia of simpler times and better people but on any closer examination these little towns are mostly welfare checks and crumbling brick.…

I arrived in Vietnam two weeks after my 18th birthday. The only things I carried with me were a notebook and a fountain pen that my mother had gifted me. When I got the news of being drafted, multiple thoughts and feelings ran through me, but what I felt the most was anger. I was angry at this war that nobody asked for, angry that the people who started the war weren’t the ones who would die, and angry that I was going to be another meat shield in a pointless conflict. At one point, I had planned to run away.…
