Personal Narrative Essay: How Travel Broadens Your Mind

Travel is to take a journey of some length, whether it is within your home state, to the opposite end of your country, or abroad. “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” (St. Augustine) People may travel to gain knowledge, seek adventure, celebrate, build new relationships or strengthen current ones, or escape daily life. No matter the reason for travel, the same outcome is always guaranteed; you will experience new experiences, your perspective will be widened, and not only will your awareness expand, you will also learn more about yourself.

Traveling changes your perspective on things. By leaving your everyday life and immersing yourself into incredibly varied scenery and cultures, you gain fresh perspectives that will remain with you for a lifetime. You are first-handedly exposed to new climates, languages, customs/traditions, cuisines, morals, and religions. “Leaving your bubble and seeing a different way of life, a different set of rules, a different definition of happiness — these are all hugely enriching experiences travel brings to us” (How Travel Broadens Your Mind, by Sander). Throughout my life, I have always been interested in different cultures from my own. I grew up in two worlds—my Colombian life at home and my American life once I stepped outside my house. I always compared the two cultures which I was part of and from those similarities and differences grew my interest in the traditions in the different parts of the world. As I grew older I noticed that one of the countries in south America had one major difference when comparing its culture—Brazil. This country speaks Portuguese due to its history.…

What does it truly mean to be intellectual? Some may say that being intellectual means being book smart, while others say that it is being street smart. In an entry of “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff, Graff believes that one can actually become intellectual if they start learning about topics they actually enjoy and then slowly start easing into challenging topics. While many argue that intellectualism is limited to the studies of school, non-academic activities such as traveling and truly experiencing these events can teach one about the history of a place, the culture, and how to solve problems. When asked why people decide travel they just say that they travel for vacation, but what they do not realize is that traveling is a learning experience.…

People who travel at an early age do succeed in their schooling and jobs. Rather than taking away from time when they could be studying, traveling provides a different sort of education for students and young adults, proving to give them a boost when they look for jobs. Author of, “How Millennials are Changing Travel,” Amanda Machado, states that, “My travels helped me obtain a summer job with Global Glimpse, an organization that takes disadvantaged students on educational trips through Nicaragua” (Machado). For Amanda, traveling secured her a paying job for the next stage of her life.
