Young people often just want to leave: to experience something new and unexpected, to find adventures and make memories, and to explore more of the world. Lots of stumbling blocks and doubts prevent them from acting on that human desire to explore. Many think they could never afford it or think that it would interrupt their college and career plans. Some would rather just fantasize about doing it later in life. These ideas frequently stop young people from seeing more of the world, and they end up missing out in huge ways. For Amanda, traveling secured her a paying job for the next stage of her life. Through the experiences she gained while traveling, she learned and grew as a person enough to be ready for a career in

What does it truly mean to be intellectual? Some may say that being intellectual means being book smart, while others say that it is being street smart. In an entry of “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff, Graff believes that one can actually become intellectual if they start learning about topics they actually enjoy and then slowly start easing into challenging topics. While many argue that intellectualism is limited to the studies of school, non-academic activities such as traveling and truly experiencing these events can teach one about the history of a place, the culture, and how to solve problems. When asked why people decide travel they just say that they travel for vacation, but what they do not realize is that traveling is a learning experience.…

One may doubt the logic of why someone would put aside money that is already scarcely distributed, just to travel. Other than the reasonable expense of travelling, it is also a matter of doing so while one is still able to. As stated by Thompson, the era of underemployed graduates is “hardly over”. This means that more and more young people will be stuck in jobs that do not offer much potential in terms of wage growth, forcing them to deal with a situation that does not promise to secure their future.…

The small farming community in Illinois about thirty minutes from both the Iowa and Wisconsin boarders tended to focus solely on agriculture and sports. Growing up an only child, I was often forced to find creative ways to entertain myself. It was quite hard to play board games, sports, and even with toys without another child around.…

A few months ago, a couple of friends and I traveled through California. Before leaving, we made a deal: no electronics or social networks unless it’s necessary. Of course we were all reluctant at first, because as teenagers, we are glued to our phones, but it turned out to be the best decision we had ever made. Getting off of our phones did not give more access to only appreciating the scenery, but we had deep conversations and learned about each other and ourselves. I don’t believe we are really aware of how much there is to life than what we see on a daily basis.…
