I love the amazing feeling of communicating with people in another language, even in cases where I only know simple words: when I went to South Korea last summer, people were delighted when I said, “annyeonghaseyo,” in greeting, and I felt proud even though I was only saying hello. It is invigorating as it is confusing for me to learn about the culture in other countries; when I was in Spain, I was surprised to learn that they do not eat lunch until two in the afternoon. The best feeling is walking around in the streets of an unfamiliar country, just breathing in the air while absorbing new and uniquely different sights. Their idea of accounting is usually of the stereotypical accountant, shackled to a desk and filling paper work from 9 am to 5 pm. The reality is that there are different types of accountants, specializing in different areas such as tax, auditing, or consulting. As I’m pursuing auditing, my future job will require me to travel to different client sites, meet new people, and learn how they run their business, so that I may properly verify the accuracy of their financial statements. It’s similar to travelling to another country, meeting new people, and learning their culture. In addition, accounting is called the language of business. If I decide in the future that I want to live in another country, I can easily move and find a job, because all the businesses in the world that want to succeed need accounting.
