Amery Race

Do you like cross country and did you know that it is mostly a mental sport? Well it is. Most of it is in your head, the little voice telling you to keep going. Talking way too much talking as I get ready for the race. As the girls head towards the starting line nervousness fills me when we are doing warmups. All the girls on the cross country team get their shoe chips on. Shoe chips are little things that you put on your shoes that gives you a number so they don't have to ask your name at the finish line. Then we get positioned to start the Amery cross country race, faster people in the front slower people in the back. Suddenly, BANG, the gun goes off. The nervousness flies off me as I start to run.

As I hit the ground I get MAD real MAD anger filled me. With other racers surging past me it was difficult to get up but as soon as I had I sprinted ahead leaving like 30 some racers in the dust. As I go past the racers, they look at like I am going WAY too fast for this part of the race. As I run the final stretch pushing my limits as far as they can go. When I come to the sprint I hear people cheering and pass 1, 2, 3, people then the finish line. I see Ari, Elie and the other people who past me in the race.
When I had taken off my shoe chips and recovered Abby told me that after I fell she had never seen me look so MAD. After the girls race was over and the boys one had started. We went to cheer them on as they finished. Only too quickly it was time to pile back on the bus to go to subway. Ari lost the money for a second so we were in the back of the line to get our food.
Finally we got our food and that veggie sub was pretty filling and delicious. Then we got on the bus once again to head home. As the results came in we had a fight over Ari’s phone and Abby’s tablet to see the results. When I found out what my time was I felt so……..I don’t know happy, excited. My time was 11:33 it was my new personal

I was so happy I was near the front of the line because I wanted to stand out and make them remember me. While sitting there group after group kept going in it was getting close to my turn. While lined up behind these huge gray doors waiting for the judges to call us in, I didn’t think I could make it. My knees started shaking and I felt the butterflies in my stomach going crazy. Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along. Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…

One of the most important identities to me is my blackness. As far back as I can remember I knew I was black and was very aware of the meaning of that. I went to a majority-minority middle, and high school, I live in an all-black neighborhood and, of course, I live in an all black household. For most of my life, I have mostly been around black people and people of color, so just going to school with majority white people is definitely a different experience. Race has shaped my life because growing up, most people who I saw in the mass media was white people and this includes my books, or on the magazines I bought was white.…

Soft whooshing sounds rose up from beneath my skis as they slid across the soft crystal like snow glistening in the bright winter sun. The cool and crisp air was the ideal temperature for a day of skiing, not too cold to make it uncomfortable, but still cold enough to keep the snow from melting and turning slushy. With these snow conditions and bright blue skies above, all in all, it looked to be a perfect day for skiing with my family. Accompanied by my Mom, Uncle, and 4 cousins, we woke at the crack of dawn, packed the car with equipment and snacks, and began the hour and a half trek to Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire. At best, my level of skiing competence could be described as advanced-beginner.…

Personal Narrative Essay-My First Experience Running a Race By:Avina Elangovan I used to wonder what motivates runners to go out and run each day? I grew up in a neighborhood where there were lots of runners, not to forget the few in my own household who would run in darkness, heat, rain, and cold weather. At that time of my life, I used to think that they were a bunch of crazy people just putting themselves in misery. It was even worse when I had to go out in the cold to watch my family run.…
