Personal Narrative: A Perfect Day For Skiing

Improved Essays
Soft whooshing sounds rose up from beneath my skis as they slid across the soft crystal like snow glistening in the bright winter sun. The cool and crisp air was the ideal temperature for a day of skiing, not too cold to make it uncomfortable, but still cold enough to keep the snow from melting and turning slushy. With these snow conditions and bright blue skies above, all in all, it looked to be a perfect day for skiing with my family. Accompanied by my Mom, Uncle, and 4 cousins, we woke at the crack of dawn, packed the car with equipment and snacks, and began the hour and a half trek to Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire. At best, my level of skiing competence could be described as advanced-beginner. I had only been skiing for two years and was still very cautious and …show more content…
Riding the lift, I noticed the skills and style of other skiers, imaging myself with the same level of skill and grace. Gazing down at the slope, filled with excitement, I imagined myself shredding down the slope with a flurry of snow spraying in my wake. Falling as I got off the chairlift should have put my confidence back in check, but it did not. In retrospect, I should have seen this as a foreboding of what was to come. Off we pushed to the top of the trail Elliot Slope. Completely disregarding everything I had been told about controlling my speed, I went full out, limiting my turns, and racing down the slope. Wind blasted against my cheeks and tears streamed from my eyes. Tucking my poles into my armpits, I crouched down in a low tuck to become more aerodynamic, a technique I learned from watching more experienced skiers racing down the slopes. We sledded down the hill at top speeds and tumbled when we hit a bump. We let go of the sled when it hit the ramp and we flew through the air with no protection and we would hit the snow beneath us. I skidded towards the lake and dug my boots into the snow pushing against my feet. I continuously climbed to the top of the hill over and over again. Messay skidded down the hill on the bowl sled.…

Montana, the state where winter seems to never go away and spring seems to be only a few weeks and suddenly it is summer and seems even when naked your body is boiling and no matter the amount of ice filled cold water you can’t stay cool enough. Don’t get me wrong I love winters and wouldn’t trade Montana winters for anything in the world but at the same I also am an individual whose moods are highly dependent on the weather and so when the cloudy skies and freezing cold temperatures finally leave I feel like I have been reborn just like a phoenix rising from the ashes. I know spring has finally arrived and my mood will be a great one when I wake up and not only feel the sun’s ray warm my face, which even with the shades down have found a way to creep into the room, and hear the heavenly notes “chick a dee chick a dee” the cute small songbird has left his tree cavity and gladly is outside chirping away letting all and any alike that no longer do they have to savage and enjoy the freshly ripe nuts, fruits, and insects all around them.…

I've always loved snowboarding through sickness and through health. It’s a stress reliever that helps me cope with my problems. When I was thirteen I had colorful green and white snowboard with abstract designs, when I stood tall it would come up to my chin. I grew attached to it because I've been through so much with the board. You could tell it was starting to wear down due to cracks in the base that looked like large canyons and every year I would take it with me to Vail to use it.…

Isolated from civilization, hundreds of kilometers away from the closest city, surrounded by land and more land, is the location of Mountain Apolaia. Covered mostly, in freezing ice for most of the year, and the target of a weather capable of frightening even the bravest of men, skiers know it as the mountain with the toughest slopes on the planet. The slopes are divided in two sections, the slopes of submission and pride slopes. Although both extremely difficult, most men, with the least sense of self-preservation, take the “easiest” slopes, submission slopes. While the more audacious skiers that challenge mother nature, take the pride slopes, which often results in severe injuries and even death.…
