Personal Narrative Essay-My First Experience Running a Race
By:Avina Elangovan
I used to wonder what motivates runners to go out and run each day? I grew up in a neighborhood where there were lots of runners, not to forget the few in my own household who would run in darkness, heat, rain, and cold weather. At that time of my life, I used to think that they were a bunch of crazy people just putting themselves in misery. It was even worse when I had to go out in the cold to watch my family run. Before I knew, my turn came when I was signed up to run a one mile race. Now this wasn’t any ordinary one mile race, there would be training and working hard. This is because my family loves to run. My dad is a runner and runs thirteen to fifteen miles

The sun was high in the sky, and the birds were chirping. The best weather for driving. My family was praying for a nice drive without rain because we didn’t want a gloomy two hour drive. My dad always goes to his races a day before to scout the course, rest well, and avoid the rush. This year was no different. I woke up feeling energized. My dad was already awake stirring his coffee while my mom was getting ready to leave. I had a late start, but I knew I would be ready to go. I quickly got dressed and brushed my teeth. My dad was calling for me so I sprinted down the stairs. Our bags were all packed and in the car. Now all I had to do was get some breakfast in me. I clearly remember breakfast, it was my favorite; I had two pancakes with syrup and strawberries on the side. I call it the “Breakfast For a Champion.” I scrambled to finish my food while my dad was doing the final check to make sure we weren’t missing anything. There was then only one thing left to do, say goodbye to my sister. Sadly, my sister couldn’t come because she had a track meet. At that time, my sister also had multiple tests to study for and was very busy. She wished us good luck, and it was time to go. I got into the silver Lexus and buckled up. I knew it would be a long, slow …show more content…
My emotions were all mixed up now. I couldn’t tell if I was more nervous or excited, I was hoping excited though. I re-tied my shoes and gave my mom a thumbs up. She was smiling ear to ear, I knew that even if I got last place she would always be proud of me! I was feeling ready, and right at that moment the gunshot went off. I started to run as fast as I could. All that practice had paid off because I felt so good! During the race I hadn’t even thought about stopping once and I was so happy with myself. I remember getting close to the finish line and sprinting as fast as I could. I ran into the chute with my dad right behind me. I ran through the chute and was handed a medal. This was my first medal I had ever won! I felt so proud, and right when I got out of the chute my mom gave me a great big hug. I was on cloud nine that whole day and it was one of my proudest moments! I grabbed a donut after the race, and we walked to the hotel. At the hotel we showered and packed our bags. Sadly, it was time to get back on the road, but it was such a

Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…

One of the most important identities to me is my blackness. As far back as I can remember I knew I was black and was very aware of the meaning of that. I went to a majority-minority middle, and high school, I live in an all-black neighborhood and, of course, I live in an all black household. For most of my life, I have mostly been around black people and people of color, so just going to school with majority white people is definitely a different experience. Race has shaped my life because growing up, most people who I saw in the mass media was white people and this includes my books, or on the magazines I bought was white.…

It had already been determined for me that I was going to race motocross before I was born. Although my family has since moved on from racing, it had been everything for as long as I can remember. I clearly remember the loud and hectic Friday nights and the chaotic Sunday mornings spent at the track. The dedication we, my two brothers and I, had towards the extreme sport and the dedication our parents showed towards our passion will forever be apart of me.
