Personal Essay: My History with English

I am a 23 year old who is going back to school for my first time in 7 years. English is one of the courses I signed up for, not only because it is a requirement, but I see it as a necessity. For me to be successful in college and whatever career I choose, I believe adequate reading and writing skills is important. My history with reading and writing has definitely had its ups and downs throughout my life. I learned to read and write at a young age. There are a lot of people in my family who are educators. My grandparents who both taught for the Beaumont school district would read with me and teach me to write whenever I would visit them, which was often. As a result, this has been a major problem for me during reading comprehension tests, mainly because they are usually timed. Once I actually focus on what it is that I am reading I have no problem comprehending it, and I’m able to complete my assignment or move on with my reading. Writing has always been a major problem for me. The rules of writing just never made sense to me. On the other hand I have always enjoyed math because of the laws, they never change. What works in a math problem will always work, and your answer is either wrong or its right, there is no in between or better answers. In writing however, you can have a rule that applies to one situation but not the other. You can write a sentence that makes sense but still fail because it could have been done better. When I was in high school we had to pass an exit exam in reading writing and math to graduate. I passed reading and math in my first attempt, although I wrote 3 essays throughout my time at Yucaipa High School, and honestly gave it my all each time; I could not pass the exit exam. After my failed attempts I gave up on all my English classes, and eventually transferred to Green Valley High School where they did not require the essay part of the exit exam. I still had English credits I needed to make up to graduate so I paid my friend to finish all my assignments while I focused on everything else I needed to graduate.
