Of all the characters, Kim had the greatest impact on the garden. Kim is a young Vietnamese girl who had made a big impact in her community. In her chapter she talked about her father’s death, she wanted to show her dad she also had patience and was hard-working. She planted a handful of lima beans in the hard, trashed, lot across the street. According to the text, “He would see my patience and my hard work. I could show him that I could raise plants, just as he had.” If Kim hadn’t done this, then, there would have never been a garden to start with. She was a 16-year-old pregnant teenager. In her chapter, Maricella was very pessimistic, she was very negative towards herself for having a baby. She wanted to miscarry the baby. According to the text “ My body was a part of nature. And just for that minute, I stopped wishing my baby would die” Maricella changed because she understood for just that bit, that having a baby was all a part of nature.
