Article #2: Participation-based therapy for children with physical disabilities The aim of this article is to evaluate the possible benefits of participation-based therapy, which incorporates goal development, family-centered collaboration with therapist, strength-based, ecology, and self-determination as the foundation for this approach. Participation-based therapy arose from the belief that the dynamic interactions of child, family, and environment (determinants); along with physical, social, and self-engagement (dimensions), results in maximum participation. Literature suggests that participation in activities outside of school, for children with physical disabilities, is important to maintain physical and mental health. A case report was preformed to demonstrate the implementation of participation-based therapy and outcomes (Palisano et al., 2012). Method. The article then preforms a literature review on the beneficial outcomes of participation within the home and community for individuals with physical disablities. …show more content…
Jason’s mother was able to rate Jason’s current level of participation using the COPM and GAS (specifically for the goals chosen and her satisfaction). Areas of assessments when using the COPM were as follows: physical participation, social interaction, and her satisfaction overall with his participation. Scores ranged from 1= not able to participate, to 10= able to do well. Jason’s mother rated Jason 1 for physical participation, 6 for social interaction, and 1 for her overall satisfaction with his participation. When using the GAS scores ranged from -2= level of achievement at the start of intervention, 0= expected outcome, and +2= ideal outcome possible (-2 to +2 scale was used to calculate a T-score). Jason was able to exceed his goal by participating in two activities with support by peers +1. He also initiated participating in activities +2.
