1. Acceptance
The first step to overcoming PTSD is accepting that you have a problem after admitting it to yourself. You have to be able to say that it is impacting your life and that you are willing to at least try to solve the problem.
Sethe admits that she had killed her baby and this is tragic, but she says that she would do it again because that was the only logical decision she could have made. Now she accepts that she has to live with the ghost of her baby. The ghost being representative of the post traumatic stress. She learns to live with the ghost and this is acceptance, but she is not yet willing to try to solve the problem.
2. Therapy

The whole society ostracizes her. No one is willing to talk to Sethe so she doesn’t want to talk about it even when it is brought up. Due to her not getting this crucial step it takes her much longer to move forward in overcoming her PTSD.
3. Desensitization
After the first two steps you must face the cause of the PTSD head on. Even though this is a painful step and will result in memories being brought up, it is a necessary one. If you do not face the cause head on then the symptoms will forever pester you.
When Buby Suggs is preaching in the clearing, it makes the attendants remember their hurtful memories head on. Since many of the colored folks in the clearing had had distasteful pasts, this step help many of them overcome the personal PTSD’s that each of them are facing. Since this was done regularly, the attendees soon became desensitized to their pasts that they fear and are able to move forward in their lives.
Another example of desensitization in Beloved is in an involuntary style. Paul D, through all the hardships he goes through is desensitized to the pain. Reduce stress People have many different ways of reducing their stress. Everyone has to find their own way of minimizes the anxiety in their life. Some suggestions are athletic activities or a finding hobby a hobby that one enjoys.
Sethe is under a great deal of stress and more keeps being piled on her plate. Before she gets to the point where she cannot handle it, she elongates her functioning time. One example of what she does is planting a garden. Of course the garden gives her food, but it is also a stress reliever. Another reducer of stress in consistently going to work. Of course the main reason for this is to earn money, but she also receives the positive externality of stress being reduced. Once she slowly stops going to work the negatives in her life come back, and she becomes less and less functional.
7. Face your fears
To get rid of your PTSD you must face any fears that you have. This is because fears can trigger PTSD and in many cases, they are related. Facing your fears helps not only in overcoming PTSD, but also in general life. You can systematically desensitize yourself to the fear slowly or you can flood yourself with your fear until you no longer fear it. This all depends on the
