Some people aren't familiar with the signs and symptoms of people with PTSD. Roland James explains how there are three main ways that people start to show their symptoms. The first one shows when you re-experience the traumatic accident or relive it. In most cases it'll be an intense nightmare or maybe a flashback. You can have physical symptoms like hyperventilation and heavy sweating. The second symptoms come from avoiding things that seem like it could lead to another traumatic event. For example: if a person was diagnosed with PTSD from a horrible car accident, they will try their hardest not to drive or if they got in an accident on the freeway, they will avoid the freeway. In order to treat PTSD, you can go through therapy along with medication. Sources from the Mayo clinic give some information on types of treatment. One form of treatment the speak of is therapy. Therapy is the most effective form of treatment for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder because it forces the person to "face their fear" without pushing them to the edge. In Columbine, the book explains how Frank goes to therapy to treat his PTSD. "Frank was riddles with symptoms of PTSD: numbness, anxiety attacks, inability to concentrate, and reclusiveness. Therapy helped him sort them out." Even though a person with PTSD is stuck with these symptoms, therapy helps that person deal with them in a calm matter. It helps them live their everyday life. The clinic also says that PTSD patients that take medication will usually take Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. This medication helps with depression and anxiety. If it is a more serious matter, people will go to a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist to help with the mental disorder. When it comes to trauma, the most common treatment that people get is trauma treatment. Trauma doesn't involve much treatment because it's easier to overcome.
