Always fear the flame, lest you be devoured by it, and lose yourself. Traumatic experiences can putrefy, rot, and completely level the essence of a soul. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder also commonly known as PTSD by the plebeians of the world, is a terrible disease that is cause by a variety of reasons, it has effected military combat veterans since the beginning of warfare, it can be treatable, it changes people, and our understanding of PTSD has changed throughout history. Every victim is different and has had a different experience, so psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is an effective way to treat PTSD. Talk therapy treatment usually lasts six to twelve weeks, but it can obviously take a lot more time to recover from PTSD. Research shows that having social support from friends or family can be a helpful, important, part to recovery. One major therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT aims to change the way a person suffering from PTSD feels and acts by changing the patterns of thinking responsible for negative emotions. There are three parts to cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, cognitive restructuring, and stress inoculation training. Exposure therapy uses visual, mental imagery to help victims face and control their fears in a safe way. Exposure therapy will often use pictures, writing, and visits to the place where the traumatic event occured to help heal the PTSD victim. Cognitive restructuring tries to alleviate senses of guilt or shame a person has toward a certain event. Sometimes people will blame themselves for situations that they did not cause for example, rape, or lose of a loved one. Cognitive restructuring tries to help someone suffering from guilt look at a situation in a realistic way. Stress inoculation therapy helps victims of PTSD by reduce symptoms and cope with anxiety by looking at situations with a healthy viewpoint. Stress inoculation therapy is very similar to cognitive restructuring. People suffering from PTSD may be prescribed medications to help suppress symptoms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has officially approved the use of two drugs to treat adult patients with PTSD. Sertraline and paroxetine also commonly known as Zoloft and Paxil where the two antidepressants approved to treat PTSD by the FDA. The drugs do not only treat PTSD, but they also treat
