War induced trauma reaches back to the age of B.C.; thus, the army has long been aware of the global impact PTSD has had. For instance, “US Combat veterans demonstrate a two- to four-fold increase in prevalence of PTSD compared to US civilians, depending on the subject cohort and research methodology used” (Richardson et al 2). In other words, the US army is a government entity and should be held responsible for the care provided to military personnel and detainees subsequent to war times regardless of the cost. On the other hand, in recent years subsequent to the Iraq and Afghanistan war additional funding and focus has been implemented to assist with PTSD treatments. For example, “in a preliminary longitudinal study overall has proven thus far if early intervention and care is offered to veterans; then, the chance of long term success in avoiding triggers of PTSD or development of chronic PTSD is possible”(Belsher, et al.153,154). Keeping this in mind, it may affect individuals seeking enrollment into service in the future, especially, when they are aware of the lack of mental health care for available to military personnel. These potential recruits may weigh the long term problems vs. the short term benefits when considering joining the US armed forces. Ultimately, in recent years the military has not shed a good light on the interworking or benefits of joining, thus, jeopardizing the very symbol of what the army used to stand for. Ultimately, by the military creating safe havens for the mentally ill and additional resources treatment of PTSD will improve over time.
