Many credit our modern day Santa Claus to Thomas Nast. In reality our modern Santa’s jolly and red costume look all started in 1931 with Haddon Sundblom and Coca-Cola. Sundblom created the bigger boned jolly Santa for a Coca-Cola advertisement in 1931 which has now became the traditionally accepted appearance. Since then, Santa has become one of the most cultural icons and anticipated part of the holiday season. Originally, Santa was dressed in green. Therefore, this change in his overall appearance has forever changed the culture and holiday season of the world. Throughout the early 1900’s Coca-Cola had been producing electric coolers. This ad became very popular as it was annually presented in some form every year. This Christmas ad became the face of Coca-Cola throughout the years that made people want to buy a coke. This ad targeted and audience of the consumers of Coca-Cola products. Through this ad the company persuades the audience to buy Coca-Cola products in the winter months. The subject and key point of this ad is the beverage of Coca-Cola. The tone of the passage is welcoming. Coca-Cola wants the audience to feel safe drinking the beverage. Through the use of examples the company states…” Old Santa could tell you that the friendliest moment a busy man ever met with is the pause that refreshes with ice-cold Coca-Cola. So, at this busiest of seasons, of course you often hear the familiar expression “Coca-Cola please.” or that shorter way of saying it, “I’ll have a Coke.” Ice-cold Coca-Cola is everything your thirst could ask for.” (Coca-Cola 1). This textual evidence attracts the audience by including Santa Claus’ opinion about the busy season. It states that in the busiest of times Santa too likes the refreshment of a coke. Just this alone makes consumers consider the product for their own refreshment. Coca-Cola understands the stress in families during the Christmas season with buying gifts, going to parties, and making food, so they make sure to talk about the refreshment of coke when busy. To emphasize the point of buying the product, Coca makes sure they target people who will host parties because according to the company everyone will ask for a Coke. The company persuades consumers to buy product for not only their own refreshment but for the refreshment of others. This strategy is effective because people often think of others first when hosting people during the holiday
