Imagine that you and a group of children are stranded on a tropical island with no shelter, no grown ups, and no civilization. Do you think that this new environment you are in will impact the course of your life? I do because the people we surround ourselves with, impact our decisions. For example, in the book, The Lord of the Flies, Piggy is influenced by Ralph in a positive way. He is influenced by Ralph in a positive way when Ralph found the conch at the beginning of the book. This happened when Piggy met Ralph for the first time. Ralph was lowering himself onto some rocks to a lagoon on the beach. There, he met Piggy, a chubby fat boy that was very intelligent. The two of them found a conch shell, which Ralph blew, as shown with this quote: “The note boomed again: and then at his firmer pressure, the note, fluking up an octave, became a strident blare more penetrating than before.” (Golding, William. Lord of the Flies. New York: Penguin, 2003. Print.) After Ralph blew the conch shell, all of the boys came. All of the boys took a vote of who would become the leader of all of the boys, and Ralph won. He made many rules, and knew that the boys needed to have a working civilization in order to survive. Piggy contributed a whole lot to the boys, but because they never listened to him due to his disabilities (overweight and asthma) they didn’t realize that he was the main person that kept that link to civilization. Piggy was the person to teach Ralph how to use the conch, to have the signal fire, and was the one who stated that “(L)ife is scientific.” All of his ideas are passed to Ralph which then in turn go into play because of the disrespect that the other boys have for him. 1 “We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment” (Jim Rohn). 2 With the exclusion of discipline, goals and priorities are hard to achieve because things can get chaotic when there is no order.3 Similarly to Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Cherry Creek High School has group leaders or captains who get to do most of the decision making, and an example of this is the Poms team. 4 The people in Poms have to obey the captain just as the choir boys “raised their hands with obedience” to vote Jack Merridew for chief ( 23). 5 It is also the Captain's responsibility to make sure that the group follows orders and cooperates.…
