Conch In Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Essay

Improved Essays
“Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding, was a story of what would happen to our society if we didn’t have elements in everyday life that keep us from turning into complete savages. Symbolism was a key factor in this story, for the things that the object or person symbolized, were those key elements for having a good, working civilization. The most important symbols in this story were the conch, the beast, and Piggy himself.
Throughout the story, the conch was a symbol of order and civility. It was used to bring the boys together, and to have meetings. In chapter one Piggy states,”We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us,” (15). Also, the boys use it as a way to calm themselves when things get out

He wants to negotiate with Jack’s tribe about stealing the fire, and taking Piggy’s glasses. In chapter eleven, when Ralph is trying to convince Piggy that going and negotiating with Jack and his tribe is very risky, Piggy states,”I got the conch. I’m going to that Jack Merridew and’ tell him, I am...You let me carry the conch, Ralph. I’ll show him the one thing he hasn’t got,” (156). Piggy, Ralph, and Samneric end up going to Jack’s tribe and confronting them. When Jack arrived from his hunting, him and Ralph were arguing with each other, which led up to them fighting each other with their spears. Then, all of a sudden, Piggy shouts,”I got the conch!.. I tell you, I got the conch!” Then the author states in response,”Surprisingly, there was silence now…” This shows that the conch still holds some sort of order, even when all hope for civility is lost. After that, Roger rolls down a gigantic rock that struck Piggy and the conch. When the conch is broken the author tells us,”...the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist,” (164). The conch was one of the last hopes for both tribes, Jack’s and Ralph’s, to keep their civility. After this event, there was no more hope at all for them return to a regular, civilized, …show more content…
Piggy contributed a whole lot to the boys, but because they never listened to him due to his disabilities (overweight and asthma) they didn’t realize that he was the main person that kept that link to civilization. Piggy was the person to teach Ralph how to use the conch, to have the signal fire, and was the one who stated that “(L)ife is scientific.” All of his ideas are passed to Ralph which then in turn go into play because of the disrespect that the other boys have for him.
Piggy was the person who had the idea of the signal fire. He was focused on getting being rescued from the island, and nothing else. Even when Ralph was losing hope, Piggy was there to keep Ralph from losing his mind. In chapter eight Ralph states,” The fire is the most important thing on the island because, because…” “He paused again and the silence became full of doubt and wonder. Piggy whispered urgently,“Rescue,” (129). When Ralph was losing hope in surviving, Piggy was always there to help

In addition to Piggy, Ralph was also profoundly influenced by the conch. He had an odd connection with the conch because the symbolism of power that the conch had brought came to him in the form of leadership. The conch is what gave him the power to command in the first place. A quote that demonstrated this was when Ralph blew the conch for the first time and the boys had to choose between him and Jack. “...most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch.…
