The conch represents democracy and civilization. It acts as a government symbol, one that keeps everyone together and have an identity and not be torn apart. At the beginning of the book, the conch gathered the children and created unity. When one of the boys had the shell it was their turn to speak. With the conch, everyone had an equal say to speak their truth. It helped organize the children and gave them all responsibilities. Also, at the start, meetings ended with a common understanding and that was because of the conch. When the boys started to fret, however, they started to not listen to each other, letting the shell go and not utilizing it as much. He and Piggy meet on the island early on. Ralph spots the shell and Piggy identifies it as a conch and describes what it does. Ralph blew it and the boys all over the island started to come. Ralph was voted to be the leader over another boy named Jack. He set up a little civilization where everyone got to talk and have a say in what they were to do. When he wanted to call an assembly he would do so by blowing the conch. As the book went on, the children sharted to get frenzied when they start to believe in a “beast.” Ralph wanted to keep the civilization going, but many of the children followed Jack because they feared him. The conch was starting to be left behind and other items were chosen instead like Piggy’s glasses for fire and spears for hunting. When the book is finishing, the conch is broken when Ralph and his kin decided to go get the glasses back from Jack. That is when the war and violence started and the conch was destroyed, so all of the hope for home and humanity came to an end. At first, the conch was something to help them connect to humanity and a system that worked, but when that humanity was lost, so was the shell. Progressively through the book, hope was being lost and the ambition for power took over instead. Without the conch, they may not have started a society to begin
