Change In Jamal's Character From 'Finding Forrester'

Change is inevitable. Change is also necessary for people to develop. “Finding Forrester” has many examples change. A black teenager named Jamal, who is a literary enthusiast, hides his intelligence and; appear to be an average kid in high school. Jamal's friends however, are a diffrent story. Not only are they the stereotypical teenagers who cause trouble but they also try to bring Jamal down to their level. They dare Jamal to rob an apartment. Jamal, going against his beliefs, breaks into the mysterious apartment and leaves behind his backpack when he is confronted by the owner. Later Jamal’s backpack is thrown out onto the street inches away from where he stands. Jamal opens his bag to find that all of his writings have been corrected. …show more content…
This influence will cause people to change themselves. They way Jamal acts as his old school is completely different than when he goes to his new school. At his old school, Jamal could be convinced to rob and steal. He would not give any answers and he played basketball. Whereas, at his new school Jama humiliates the English teacher, has a possible love interest, and his basketball skills improve. Jamal changed from being a normal teenager to a top of the line student; however, Jamal does have some problems at his new school. “When a Manhattan prep school recruits Jamal for his skills, he seeks Forrester’s help in dealing with his new environment.” (levy , 2000, page 2) When Jamal goes to his new school, he has some problems adjusting and for the first time Jamal asks someone for help. At his old school, he was ahead of everyone; therefore, he never had to ask for help. However, when Jamal goes to his new school the classes are tougher and his new English teacher, professor Crawford, is strict and he has a sever dislike for the way Jamal slacked off in his classes at his old school. Not only dose Jamal goes to Forrester to ask for his advice on the situation but he also changes his behaviors. He is asking someone for help. Whereas, at his old school there was no need to. The significance of Jamal asking for help is that he is developing social skills that he did not have before, much like how Forrester is developing his own. Even Crawford can also see a difference in Jamal’s writing. When Jamal writes at home, he makes many mistakes. When Forrester throws out Jamal’s bookbag, Jamal finds that Forrester has gone through all of the Jamal’s writings and Forrester has graded them. Forrester wrote down noticed many errors and he had marked them for Jamal to correct. When Jamal writes at Forresters place, Forrester changes how Jamal writes.
