Position Description According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, Occupational Therapist treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. They help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. Occupational Therapist can work in many different fields which include working with patients with permanent disabilities, working in educational settings, and providing early intervention therapy to infants and toddlers who have, or at risk of having, developmental delays. Additionally, Occupational Therapist may also work in mental health setting where they help patients who suffer from developmental disabilities, mental illness, or emotional problems.
Requirements and Qualifications Based on the information provided by the Occupational Outlook Handbook, most Occupational Therapist enter the Occupation with a Master’s Degree in occupational therapy. Master’s program generally take 2-3 years to complete and doctoral programs is 3 years. Additionally, both master’s and doctoral programs require at least 24 weeks of supervised fieldwork, in which prospective occupational therapists gain clinical work experience.
Important Qualities Occupational Therapy is a field which require certain qualities in order to be a fully effective healthcare professional. Among the important qualities are compassion, flexibility, interpersonal skills, patience, and writing skills.
