Occupational Safety and Health Administration
In April 1970, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Act was adopted in response to the lost productivity and wages, medical expenses, and disability compensation to assure safety and preserve human resources. OSHA was created under the ACT as part of the United States Department of Labor. OSHA provides many activities to reinforce its goals and purposes and requires certain standards to be followed. In addition, it has some limitations of its coverage, inspection priorities and guidelines.

The process starts with establishment of advisory committees, which are composed of governmental workers and members from some agencies, for example labor agency. Then, a proposed standard is published in the Federal Register. Any interested parties may request more information about it and send their responses and feedback. After the hearings, depending on whether the standard is adopted or not, it is reported in the Federal Register with explanation and rationale for its implementation or declination. In addition, if immediate protection of workers is necessary, an Emergency standard may be adopted immediately, but later changed or challenged. Some standards related to dentistry in particular include the following: bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication, electrical and general requirements, personal protective equipment (including eye and face protection), medical services and first aid, wiring methods and components, …show more content…
Additionally, the General Duty Clause requires all employers and employees to comply with occupational safety and health standards under this Act. Any interested parties may file a complaint about dental office concerning any OSHA standard without disclosing their names. The OSHA stuff then gather the evidence and conducts documentation to determine if violation is present and requires inspection. However, inspection of complains is based on priorities. If OSHA staff determines that there is a sufficient ground to believe that a violation of its standards exists, an inspection on site may be conducted. However, it is usually involves a serious issue and used to enforce the OSHA standards. If violation are present, OSHA will issue a citation and provide an employer with time necessarily to correct the violations. Employers, who disagree with a citation, may submit a written petition within 15 days of the citation with the issue being
