Leadership is an important element for an organization to be operational and successful, and having better leaders will engage employees to bring positive outcomes. Why is leadership style important? Leadership style is an approach taken by a leader with his capacity to lead and the act of leading (Buell, 2012). Transformational leaders provide stimulation, motivation, individual consideration, staff empowerment, and mentoring their employees, which improve job satisfaction, growth, retention, and identifies common values and vision within the organization (Marquis & Huston, 2015; Kornusky & Heering, 2017). It is essential to recognize your personal values, beliefs, weaknesses, and strengths in your leadership style. You can use your strengths in promoting ideal working relationship and maintaining a positive environment, and discover what corrective actions you need to improve on your areas of weaknesses. My plan for leadership development is finding a mentor that will guide and transform me to become successful, and to continue networking with colleagues who possess leadership skills that I desire to emulate. Within the organization, I can observe and communicate with these leaders and inquire about their approaches to managing their employees and running their departments efficiently. Learning gain from a mentor such as shared experience, application of leadership ideologies, decision-making, self-confidence, and receiving feedback can strengthen my leadership style, especially when put into practice. Attending in-services on building leadership skills such as interpersonal skills and using emotional intelligence will enhance my communication in motivating others, gain the trust of my colleagues, and improve on dealing with conflict resolution and adapting to change.
