Examine Experience: Due to the slow afternoon on the floor I was able to spend a lot of time with my patient working on my communication skills. I was able to get her background information on, even though I was not able to change or do anything with the stoma I know that would have felt more comfortable doing it after talking about it with her. I think that as nurses become more experiences it is easy to assume that you know more about the patient’s condition than they do, I hope that I always remember to listen to what the patient is trying to tell me about their condition in order to give them the best possible care. Bevis defines communication as a process in which self-reflection and the use of verbal and non-verbal cues help to promote the ability to send and receive messages (Foley, 2009).
