PACU Reflection

This week in clinical, me and another nursing student were assigned to go and visit the PACU. All patients are admitted to the PACU, Post-anesthesia care unit, following surgery. We visited the PACU in the first week of clinical, so I was familiar with the environment. When I first walked into the PACU it was empty, but the nurse told me just give it a few minutes it is going to get busy. I was assigned to be with a nurse for the day and observe how she takes care of patients after surgery is completed. The first patient came in with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist at the head of the bed. The anesthesiologist gave report to the nurse and filled out a couple of documents. The recovery room or the post-operative care unit (PACU) is an area within the operating room where a specialized registered nurse provides care to patients immediately following an operative procedure as the patient recovers from the surgical procedure and anaesthesia. According to the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN), nurses specialized in this area of perioperative care must demonstrate certain minimum skills and knowledge referred to as practice standards in order for them to be considered competent in their field of specialty (ACORN, 2013). The competency standards are useful in a way not only to access the professional markup for the license of registered nurse, but is also intended to maintain the standard of nursing…

Yesterday in clinical I was on the labor and delivery unit. As everyone know, mom and baby is not my preference. For me, the problem is not caring for mom or even seeing a delivery, it is caring for the tiny baby. I wanted to be on the labor and delivery side because I hoped to see a delivery. There was one delivery on the unit, but unfortunately the mom was not receptive to having a student in the room.…

My patient was a 77-year-old woman and she had COPD, hypertension, and chronic microcytic anemia. When I first went in the room with my patient I went with the RN and watched her perform her assessment and introduced myself to her and told her I was a student nurse and would be helping taking care of her. She was a sweet lady and pleasant, but you could tell she was not wanting to be where she was.…

A Day with a Hospice Nurse Hospice nursing is more than just “nursing”, its listening, showing compassion and being and advocate for peace and comfort. Hospice nurses provide individualized care to their patients and families during a time of difficulty and transitioning. Growing up, I have always been fascinated by human anatomy and the functions that the body is responsible for. My mother went to school to be a Nurse Assistant in my youth, and whenever she wasn’t using her books, I would grab one and read and be perplexed and yet intrigued by the myriads of complex words and diagrams in front of me. Before really looking into the actual field of Nursing, I assumed that nurses only worked in hospitals, and that it was quite easy to become one. However, neither of these are the case, yet this challenge and the many possibilities in the medical field are intriguing.…
