In my professional career, I have a small amount of experience in strategic planning. When I worked for North Shore-Long Island Jewish Hospital as a senior analyst, I had the opportunity to contribute to my company’s strategic plan. North Shore-LIJ is one of the nation’s largest health care systems. The company needed to improve the strategic plan for handling patient appointments. At the time, North Shore-LIJ was experiencing problems with placing appointments for patients. June Scarlett, the Vice President of Patient Access Services was in charge of updating the strategic plan for managing patient appointments. Patients didn’t have a direct number to call to make appointments and had to wait on hold for over an hour to get a live representative. North Shore-LIJ’s plan for handling patient appointments was outdated and inconsistent with organizational goals and values. June Scarlett gave four analysts an opportunity to create a strategic plan for scheduling patient appointments. I was the lead analyst. After months of strategic planning, our team created a centralized call center that was easy to access with one telephone number and promptly made patient appointments for a variety of practices within the hospital. Strategic planning’s importance stems from its ability to help organizations and communities anticipate and respond to change in wise and effective ways (Bryson, J.M, 2004, p26). If done well, strategic planning actually improves political decisions, as well as programs, policies, and learning how to do better (Bryson, J.M, 2004, p19).
