Usful Glasswork is a local nonprofit organization that provides jobs to refugees and homeless individuals struggling to find work and job training. The organization not only supplies the community with jobs but creates environmentally friendly household goods. Usful Glassworks recycles empty wine, beer and liquor bottles into reusable glass products which is then sold to and bought by local businesses. Every dollar made and donated supports the program and environment. The nonprofit recently began to struggle needing $250,000 to keep the organization up and running. Strategic planning is a useful tool that will help determine the changes that the organization will have to make and how to accomplish them for future growth. Usful Glassworks lacked in strategic planning which lead it to close the doors. Carlyn Blake should have gathered the necessary data to create a bulletproof plan. Such data includes; the number of staff needed, appropriate salaries, income levels needed to support growth and change, and what efforts will be needed in fundraising. Growth should be anticipated therefore all factors should be understood by the board and staff members. $250,000 is a large amount needed which demonstrates a mistake was made when considering how much income was necessary to operate the nonprofit. The success of the organization could have exceeded expectations, although strategic planning is an on-going process. Usful Glassworks was founded in 2008 during the recession which could have affected the strategic plan. With an improved economy, the plan should be changed based on those improvements. The salaries of the employees were increased which altered the financial components of the organization. The organization needed to hire more employees to produce the high demand of the glassware. Without enough employees, the product couldn’t be made therefore the organization lost money and donors. If the strategic plan is not effective then there is a ripple
