The diary covers 4 years of Nin's life and introduces numerous figures, many of which grow to be physically attracted to Nin. There were 6 major figures in Nin's first diary who all play an influential role in her identity. June is a dramatic and intense love affair in Nin's life. Anaïs heard tales of June from Henry before her arrival in Paris and as soon as June arrives Anaïs is completely infatuated with her. June becomes the temptress as Nin buys her expensive gifts and longs for physical intimacy. Anaïs' relationship with June is a paradox of a traditional love affair. Nin, the more feminine of the two, plays the masculine role and June assumes the role of the temptress. June becomes everything Nin is not and all she yearns to become. Nin pushes her own aspirations onto June as the affair continues, placing her on an even higher pedestal. June is completely aware of her power over Anaïs and continually manipulates her using her beauty.
