Her first collection of poetry was published in 1968, entitled Black Feeling Black Talk. Black solidarity/power and revolutionary actions were strongly encouraged in her poems and compositions. Giovanni has received many awards, including Mademoiselle’s "Highest Achievement Award" and numerous honorary doctorates. "The Princess of Black Poetry" was the name that was given to Nikki because of her outstanding work. She has composed many pieces of work in her lifetime, which will always be greatly prized. One poem that can be clearly related to the Black Arts Movement is, “Knoxville, Tennessee”. This poem describes a beautiful southern summer atmosphere in her hometown. It depicts and beautifully shows the simple crops that were typically grown in the south that can later be prepared for delicious meals. It also includes the scene of a Gospel Church, which is usually associated with the Black population. She describes the scene as if she was a young girl living in the moment.
