My Gingerbread Cookies

Christmas for me bring us a lot of good memories, and very few unpleasant memories. One unpleasant memory in particular is what I will be telling you about. The time I had to make gingerbread cookies for the first time. It may sound like this story should be pleasant or funny. It is funny and has some good points in it, but it’s the reason why I had to make the gingerbread cookies that make this story a unpleasant on for me. To give some back story my mother was the one to always make the gingerbread cookies. It was something our family did. The girls: My mother, my sister and I would bake the cookies, and then all of my family would decorate them. This time was so important to me because it was a time all of us were together and laughed as …show more content…
I made the third batch of cookies, this time I was careful and they turned out great. By the time I was done baking the cookies my grandpa was getting up to go to work. I have never been so bad in the kitchen in my entire life. That night covered in flour I thought about how fun making gingerbread cookies used to be for me. I thought back to the memories I had with my mother while making these cookies. In that moment I realized I wasn’t making these cookies for my grandpa I was making them for me. I missed my mom and the memories we …show more content…
I wasn’t a kid enjoying the magic of Christmas. I was the person making that magic for the rest of my family. The next day everyone showed up, and we had Christmas as normal, or as normal as we could. Everyone loved my ninja gingerbread cookies, and my family ate them all. My gingerbread cookie disaster that only I know about has become something I laugh about every time I make gingerbread cookies. That Christmas I learned that no matter who is there or not there we are all family. It’s not about if I have normal or ninja gingerbread cookies. I thank God for that Christmas for letting me be able to make the magic that everyone enjoyed. All the lessons God taught me in time management, cleaning, cooking and everything

I was so angry at my mom at that moment not only had we just received our food stamps, but she was nowhere to be found and had not been home for four days. I stayed up late that night expecting her to come in with some wild excuse, but I was going to tell her I wanted to live with grandma. She did not come home, in fact, I must have expected it deep down inside since I knew where all my sister Christmas gifts were and I stayed up late and made sure everything was wrapped and under the tree. I thought surely, she will be home for Christmas morning, but the next day we got up and no mom, no food, and no gifts for me. I remember my little sister who was only four at the time taunting me with how bad I must have been for Santa to not bring me anything. Our grandmother came over to see what Santa had brought us only to find two children that had been left home alone at Christmas with no food and no way to contact anyone for help. She was furious, and she took us away that very…

From fake, odd-colored trees, to inflated prices, and ridiculous sales. People are willing to spend inflated prices to get their partner, child and other relatives the “gift of their dreams.” In addition, people rather express the unwillingness to put aside family differences and making compromises to join together for this special day. In essence, choosing not to focus on what it truly means to share a “Merry Christmas,” with loved ones. Christmas should be about family, making memories, simple being with your loved ones. It’s a holiday we should remember as an experience, of love and closeness, not stress and anxiety. It should be a time to give thanks for all the blessings we have received throughout the year. I am sure Christmas means something different to different people; however, I think we can all agree that in the end our family is what matters. It goes as the saying says, “brought together by blood, but kept together by love.” With that said, I choose to instill in my family the true meaning of Christmas, and I apologize in advance if I offend you, but I wish you and yours a very “MERRY…

As I was excitingly woken up by my brothers on Christmas, I ran downstairs to see what I had gotten. I opened my presents like I do every year, and got excited about them like every year, and then thanked everyone for my presents like every year. As we had just finished up opening presents, expecting no more, my mom told my brothers and I that there was one more present and got out her phone. Whenever my mom pulls out her phone, the family knows she’s about to record something or take pictures . So, my brothers and I cautiously looked at each other, deciding if we should get excited or not. As we walked down the thirty foot wooden hallway with the dining room to the left and the front living room to the right, my brothers and I were in a silent…

This year’s craziness and smells of carne and my family gathering in my grandparents’ kitchen brings a big, bubbly smile to my face, like always, because I know this means the official start of Christmas, and Christmas means I get to be with my family and Santa is going to bring me presents! My mom says that she heard that I’m on Santa’s nice list for the 5th year in a row! I always look forward to tamale making because I get to be around all my cousins and aunts and uncles and watch them make yummy food for our Christmas Eve feast while I make gingerbread houses! And every year when I ask if I can help this time, grandma always explains while grinning that “you can’t help with the tamales until you’re tall enough to reach the counter because someone so tiny will get knocked into the masa and then we will have tamales that taste like Alejandria! Ay, Carumba! What a mess that would make!”. But it’s okay…

One summer when I was 3 or so I got to go to Louisiana. My dad had a great-uncle that lived down there with his wife and their 2 dogs. The great-uncle was a pilot in World War ll. He was even there on D-Day as one of the pilots! Anyways I was little and super excited that I was finally getting to meet Uncle Dick and Aunt Nell. I had gotten to talk to them on the phone a couple of times, but I was normally too shy to talk to them or say anything but hi and bye. But the trip came with a but. We were going to Moss Point, Mississippi to help people who lost their homes after hurricane Katrina, then we were going to go to Uncle Dick’s and Aunt Nell’s house for 1 night, then we were going to go to one of my relatives houses in Missouri, and then finally we were going home. But what they didn’t tell me is that we were going to be doing all of this during Easter and my birthday. At first I was happy because we were going on a road trip, but then I was angry because I wouldn’t even be spending my own birthday in my own home, but on an air mattress on the cold hard floor. Then after some time I realized I will be getting more presents this way, I can get some from my relatives in Missouri, some in Louisiana from those relatives, and some from my actual family.…

The school had just gone off for winter break. I was excited to be free of homework for two weeks I thought to myself. As days past I would just relax by sleeping in more than I would usually and play video games with some friends and my cousins. Then Christmas came out of nowhere and I got to see relatives that I haven't seen for in years at my grandma's house that had been decorated with big old-fashioned Christmas lights. Furthermore, the house had the exact same apple tree but this time the tree had grown to be as tall as the house and had lost most of its leafs. After Christmas and as more time passed our family met again for New Year's Eve at my grandma's house of course. We would celebrate with my favorite traditional food of pancit, which is basically noodles, various vegetables mixed together.…

Wearing my Christmas pajamas, I rushed into the cold, blue car as quick as I could. I was excitedly telling my sister, who was carrying several board games, to hurry so we would not be late. The anticipation was killing me. Arriving at grandmas, I opened the big red door and the smells of freshly baked cookies and hot chocolate rushed up to greet me. Walking around the house, I recognized the Christmas decorations that were in the traditional places. Everyone had arrived, my cousins- Timmy, Alexis, Robbie, my Grandma, my sister Madelyn, and my Grandpa, in his overstuffed chair asleep. Finally, we began our favorite event of the year, The Cocoa Party.…

I now look forward to seeing family I haven’t seen in a long time or have never seen. For example, I have a cousin who is turning two this year. She and her family live out in Utah and we don’t get to see them at all. I haven’t met Chloe or my Uncle Moroni yet. More importantly, I can’t wait to see all of my family. I especially can’t wait to see my older sister Sheryl. With work and school we don’t get to see each other often making the time we do spend together all the more special. This is the reason that Christmas is my favorite holiday, I get to see all of my family. Now I really don’t care what I get. In fact, I actually have to be told to write a list. Even then, it is a minimal list at best. Christmas now has a deeper meaning for me. My religion has gotten stronger as I have grown and matured, therefore the religious meaning, Christ’s birth, has also become a major part of my life. My grade in school has also affected the way that I view Christmas as…
