Personal Narrative: The Cocoa Party

Improved Essays
Wearing my Christmas pajamas, I rushed into the cold, blue car as quick as I could. I was excitedly telling my sister, who was carrying several board games, to hurry so we would not be late. The anticipation was killing me. Arriving at grandmas, I opened the big red door and the smells of freshly baked cookies and hot chocolate rushed up to greet me. Walking around the house, I recognized the Christmas decorations that were in the traditional places. Everyone had arrived, my cousins- Timmy, Alexis, Robbie, my Grandma, my sister Madelyn, and my Grandpa, in his overstuffed chair asleep. Finally, we began our favorite event of the year, The Cocoa Party.

Grandma sits in her rocking chair, pulls out her old, red Christmas book, and the first event begins. Every time she pulls out that book I get excited and wonder which story she will read first. After our Christmas story time, we rush into the kitchen for the next activity, which is always playing games for prizes. The first one we always play is Bingo. The games remain simple, but everyone always gets competitive. Sitting around the oval, oak table, we wait anxiously for Grandma to call out the numbers. Seeing her mix the numbers around in the green, plastic bowl, everyone blurts out a number, in hopes she chooses the lucky number they need. I am normally the champion at Bingo. Other games will be played throughout the night like Monopoly, Uncle Wiggly, and Sequence. When someone wins a game, that person will win a present. The presents, which are wrapped in elegant Christmas paper and curly ribbon, will normally contain candy, socks, sunglasses, blankets, paper, and even tissues. These presents make playing the games much more fun and give excitement to the night.

The day of the Cocoa Party remains meaningful to me in many ways. This gives my Grandma, cousins, sister, and I a day that can be spent with one another creating lasting memories that bring us closer as a family. I love to see my Grandma light up with joy just because of this special time we share together. Someday, I hope to continue this event with my own

That was until I found a recipe on how to make some chocolate chip cookies and said, “I can totally do this!” an hour and a half later, (yes ... I struggled) and with some guidance of my mother, a batch of cookies popped out of the oven. I was scared at first to let anybody try them because they looked quite horrid, but as soon as the first daredevil, my older brother, tried this twelve-year-old’s cookies he immediately smiled, shoved the remaining cookie into his mouth, and grabbed another two.…

Tamales Through Time This year’s craziness and smells of carne and my family gathering in my grandparents’ kitchen brings a big, bubbly smile to my face, like always, because I know this means the official start of Christmas, and Christmas means I get to be with my family and Santa is going to bring me presents! My mom says that she heard that I’m on Santa’s nice list for the 5th year in a row! I always look forward to tamale making because I get to be around all my cousins and aunts and uncles and watch them make yummy food for our Christmas Eve feast while I make gingerbread houses! And every year when I ask if I can help this time, grandma always explains while grinning that “you can’t help with the tamales until you’re tall enough to reach the counter because someone so tiny will get knocked into the masa and then we will have tamales that taste like Alejandria!…

Land of the Free As Patrick Henry said in 1775, “Give me liberty or give me death!” The founding fathers of our country gave it all so you and I could have freedom. What some people do not realize is that if the founding fathers had gotten caught or if we had lost the Revolutionary War, the founding fathers would have been hung for treason. They put their lives on the line to provide freedom for many generations to come. We can celebrate the Fourth of July and have fun, but we also need to remember what our forefathers had to do to get us to this point.…

For my first birthday my mom made me a white cake with chocolate frosting. There were pink sprinkles laced along the edge and a prominently placed “1” candle in the middle. I was too young to remember this yummy cake, however, there is photographic evidence that more of the cake made into my hair then ever did into my mouth. What I do remember about my birthday is asking my mom to make me a different kind of cake every year. I could never pick a favorite; there were far too many cakes to pick from.…
