Integrity is the characteristic of behaving and thinking congruently with one’s personal values and beliefs. Furthermore, integrity is doing what you believe to be right, irrespective of the costs, downside, or hardships involved. Like Ayn Rand, I believe “achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values”. In respect to my life, my father literally tried to discourage me from pursuing the career of my choice. A career that elates me just upon thinking about it. He oppressed me for years to go to medical school, for he believes that it is the only place I can truly be successful. However, I am convinced that my potential to succeed is infinite regardless of what field I chose to study in. I did what I believed was correct, irrespective of the outcome of losing a parent. I demonstrated personal integrity by being true to myself. I knew if I surrendered to my father’s will in going into the medical field, I might not like it. From childhood, my mother instilled in me that women are not to be treated as second class citizens to men. Also, gender is never to be perceived as two opposing sets of ideals. Men and women should have equal rights and opportunities, especially the right to be educated. Therefore, regardless of what my father believes what women should be, I am elated that I…
