There is an African Proverb that says “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This quote resonates with much of my life and parallels my experience with Duke’s Team Fuqua culture. Additionally, it aligns with the synergetic dynamic necessary in healthcare to provide coordinated care to patients. I witnessed how important teamwork is in healthcare last year when I hopped on the train from D.C. to New York within 6 hours after hearing that my diabetic, blind grandmother was rushed to the hospital for the third time in one week. When I arrived at the hospital, I was amazed at how disjointed the care was and how many gaps in communication existed among the care coordinators who assisted her. I remained calm in trying to piece together the information we were receiving, while my Jamaican and overly aggressive grandmother vividly expressed her frustrations with her care. My reasons for pursuing an MBA from Fuqua are specific. I want to increase accessibility to healthcare and improve patient outcomes in care delivery. At Fuqua, I intend to foster the spirit of collaboration I will need in my healthcare career, by engaging and contributing to the community through increasing awareness of healthcare issues, advancing local and global communities, and supporting diversity initiatives.
