Multiple Generations in the American Workforce

With the unparalleled cost of living rates ever increasing, Americans have no other choice but to remain in the workforce longer than ever previously experienced. The country is currently witnessing four different generations in the labor pool. These generations include the Silent Generation (ages 70-87), the Baby Boomers (ages 51-69), Generation X (ages 35-50), and Generation Y (ages 19-current), or better known as the Millennials (Dimock, Michael). For the purpose of this paper, a generation is defined as “a group of individuals, most of whom are the same approximate age, having similar ideas, problems, attitudes, etc.” (“Generation”).
Due to all of these diverse generations collaborating at the same time, there is no uniformity in the employees’ work ethic or way of thinking. For example, the Silent Generation grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. The people who are still in the workforce for this generation typically are loyal to employers, possess interpersonal skills, and believe promotions and raises come from job longevity. The next era, Baby Boomers, is known to have created the term “workaholics”, having 60+ hour work weeks, and believe rules are meant to be obeyed, but broken when needed. Meanwhile, the characteristics of Gen X have been criticized as “slackers” for the time difference in labor compared to the Baby Boomers.
