As a child, I had absolutely no idea that that was actually what High School was like. I thought that the movie was just about a group of people that, just so happen, to be in detention together. The thought never crossed my mind that I was watching a very realistic version of what people go through every day. The main characters represent the effects of peer pressure, parent influence, and child abuse: The exact struggles that many students go through today. The characters all have a reason that they attended detention on that Saturday morning, such as: the very popular, Claire, decided to skip class with her “friends” to go shopping, the other popular person, Andrew, was in detention because he taped a poor guy’s butt cheeks together because he felt that his father would be proud of him if he did. Then there is Bender, he pulled the fire alarm at school, which was not a surprise to anyone because he was always into some kind of mischief. Also, there is Clark, he is the brains of the group, and he brought a gun to school with the intentions of killing himself. And finally, there is Allison, she is an awkward girl that is also a compulsive liar that has absolutely nothing better to do with her day than to come to detention. Claire and Bender pair off and show that even the highest of popular people can fall for a lower status person. Andrew and Allison also pair off, another example of the same situation. This realization never occurred to me until I rediscovered the movie a few years ago, as a teenager. When I was younger, I never thought about the pressure there is to be with someone of your status, I just thought that when you meet someone you really care for, that that is who you are with, no questions
