Growing up and progressing through elementary school, I was always one of the smartest, most athletic kids in the grade. I excelled at sports and in school while putting forth minimal effort. As I grew older, the material in school became more difficult. Sports were becoming more competitive too. I was falling behind academically and athletically but did nothing to catch up again. By 8th grade, I was cut from the basketball team I had played on for three years because I no longer had the athletic ability or skills in order to compete. I was very upset and considered quitting. Although my high school years are mostly defined through academic success, I would have to say my most meaningful achievements came through the North Carolina FFA. This national organization provides me with countless opportunities to showcase my leadership abilities in my school, community, and state. Obtaining the positions of Vice President and President of my high school FFA chapter has had an enormous impact on my life. These positions led to serving on nominating committees, planning community events, attending leadership conventions and conferences, and participating in a state-qualifying parliamentary procedure team. It was these experiences that gave me a passion for public speaking and Agribusiness.…

The most painful part of an ACL tear is not the ligament itself, but the heartbreak that accompanies it. With great friends and a 4.0, I was the epitome of a successful high school athlete. My world came crumbling down when I tore my every ligament in my right knee, weeks before the state tournament.…

An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

My most positive high school experience for me has to be when I was inducted into National Honor Society for my senior year. This was something that I has been striving to do since my freshman year after I received my first academic letter. But after our school decided to only allow seniors to be inducted, raised the GPA requirement, and reduced the amount of people that would be allowed to be inducted I wasn’t sure if my goal would still be attainable. But after three years of strenuous classes, constant volunteer service, and keeping my grades up I finally received an acceptance letter and was inducted into NHS where I am able to surround myself with others that have the same academic goals as…
