Coming from a Mexican family and being a female is a bit difficult. It is difficult when you have family that is waiting for you to “grow up” to become a mother. Some family members belief this is still a norm for a female to get married, have children, and stay home to take care of the family. Just because some of the women in my family became mothers at a young age, I did not want to become a mother, at least not yet. On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich, she wrote “Happily, though, my fears turn out to be entirely unwarranted: during a month of poverty and toil, no one recognizes my face or my name, which goes unnoticed and for the most part unuttered.…
Life is full of people that help shape and mold you into the person you become. Maybe it's a parent, grandparent, teacher, or maybe even a friend. For me at least, it's my older sister, Amber Oertel. Amber has been with me as long as I can remember, granted she would have rather had mom and dad bring home a puppy instead of me, I still like to think she still likes me. She has been with me through some of the greatest losses in both of our lives, she has also been the source of some of my greatest adventures, but most of all, she has been an important role model in my life.…
The impact she has had on my life is not one that many have. The impact expands past just being nice to me because of my parents. Yet, her actually taking an interest in my life to make sure I succeed and rise to my highest…
I am a proud gymnast. Gymnastics was the first place where I experienced rejection, but it was also the first place where I experience success. After my first gym closed down, my mother began researching competitive teams for my sister and me to join. We attended many competitive team tryouts; despite accepting my sister, most gyms rejected me: they thought that I was too slow and not quite talented enough. Although the owner of Mid-Island Gymnastics agreed with the other coaches, he thought that I had potential because I was a hard worker.…

In ninth grade I started to play Volleyball for my school team. At tryouts it was evident that I was a new student to the game of volleyball but my friend and I left tryouts that day with a resolve to practice every second we had free. We made a pact to work on and practice the techniques taught to us by the coaches and the experienced players. Low and behold I made the junior varsity team. The coaches told me that, with practice I would become a great volleyball player.…
My Life as a Teen Mom I belong to a crowd of young, strong, independent teen moms. What does a “Teen Mom” actually mean? It’s a term that people occasionally bash us, teen moms, with. Most of the outside population blame us for being a teen mom because they say we ruined our lives and will never have a successful future. Some may say that a teen mom is just someone who gets pregnant and has a baby at a really young age.…
Personally what drives me and makes me successful is my competitive nature and desire to win. In sports this trait of mine is what makes me a better athlete. I hate losing and not that i'm a sore loser but I become unhappy with myself whenever I take a loss. Specifically in basketball, my need to beat my opponent is often what makes me successful on the court. When it comes to pickup basketball games I feel the most pressure to win making me play my best.…
The Day I Became a Mom The day I became a mom will always remain one of the happiest, proudest, and probably scariest days of my life. The feelings I felt that day are almost indescribable because I don’t think I have ever felt so many emotions all at once, like I did that day. My pregnancy was long, filled with numerous complications.…
HOW TO RELIEVE STRESS OF STAY-AT-HOME MOMS I believe being a stay-at-home mom is just as hard as being a working mom. Some may disagree, but only stay-at-home mom will truly know the difference. We go from waking twice as early to make breakfast before kids go to school all the way to changing diapers in the middle of the night. Laundry, cooking, cleaning, chasing, the crying while you’re trying to do something.…
Being from the small town of Cheraw, South Carolina has given me many opportunities to interact with those in the community. Growing up around many of these individuals resulted in developing different relations. Relations in terms of natural association with others. As a result of developing relations with different individuals in my hometown, I began to notice the socioeconomic challenges among them. These challenges including, but not limited to: financial crisis, family issues, and/or economic dilemmas.…
Growing up, I always remember hearing about the importance of having a well-rounded life and education. It was expressed by the people around me, in the TV shows I watched, and in the books I read. Even though this didn't always mean the same thing, I got the impression that a well-rounded student got high grades, participated in clubs, took part in something musical, and played a sport. As time went on, and I grew into a teenager, this thought stayed in my mind.…
“This is going to be great, we have been waiting a long time!” I remember telling my mom this before driving 2 ½ hours to adopt my sister Mia, “I know, we are all excited.” My mom responded. Adopting my sister Mia was not an easy task.…
