What do you want to be when you grow up is a question that most if not every young boy or girl has been asked at some point in their childhood. The reply is often anything from doctor to lawyer to teacher and everything in between. Whatever the answer, each child ultimately wants to grow up to be successful. For many that success depends on going to and graduating from college. There are many reasons for wanting to go to college. Some want to get away from their surroundings; others are pushed by their parents and other adults; then there are some who just understand the importance of getting a college degree. Now more than ever before that importance cannot be over-stated. For me, going to college has a personal meaning. Of course I want to leave my surroundings and explore a new environment, and make my parents proud but, most importantly I want to make myself proud and set an early educational foundation for my future.

Going into high school my main focus was playing basketball. It has always been a dream for me to play college basketball. Although my parents supported me tremendously, they also continued to stress the importance of academics. Playing sports kept be grounded because I knew that in order to play basketball I had to devote myself to academics. Over the past 3 years my mindset has changed and my focus has shifted more to academics than sports. Sports has kept me from doing bad things and hanging with the wrong people. I still have my dream of playing college ball, but now more than ever before I want to expand on the academic success that I have enjoyed in high school. Basketball will continue to be my dream however, getting an education has become more important so I can be financially stable and able to raise up my own children without any
