Morals and Ethics in Society Morals and ethics in society play major roles in our lives and our work environments and I am more than happy to write this research paper to help explain the similarities and its key differences. (Diffen, 2016) Like a prison guard could believe that morally all men should be free, yet everyday he attends work and bends his morals to maintain his ethical code in his workplace. As with ethics having an origin so does morals and it stems from the Latin word “mos” meaning “custom”. (Diffen, 2016) And according to Latin-dictionary.org mos is related to custom, habit, manner, behavior, and morals. Morals are derived from the individual and is used as a personal compass of right and wrong. Although humans have morality and it is usually consistent it is subject to change through an individual’s beliefs. While ethics are governed by professional and legal guidelines in a particular time and place morality transcends cultural norms. Morality deals more with someone dealing with good or evil and ethics is more choosing between right and wrong. (Hubpages, 2013) So the key difference between ethics and morals is that ethics deals with external forces while morals deal with internal forces. In conclusion both ethics and morals have their difference and similarities they both originate from human nature and culture. While ethics is more applied in the work atmosphere and morals can also play a part in the workplace in more of a personal life compass that one has gained from life experience and beliefs.
