Good People By David Lindsay-Abaire: An Analysis

While it is frequently ignored, there is a very important distinction to be made between ethics and morals. Ethics are derived from society and its norms. They differ culturally and with age and are placed on the individual according to the social setting they find themselves in. Breaking ethical code often results in shame from the community. Morals are only reflect beliefs of the individual. Every person has his or her own morals and while they can be influenced by upbringing or aspects of society, on the basic level, they are simply what each individual finds to be right or wrong. It can create tension in the community or tension in the individual, should they foresee the this turn of events. When faced with the choice between one’s morals or ethics, I feel that morals should be held in higher importance. That being said, some people find it morally acceptable to do many horrible things. Therefore situations should be evaluated from both sides to determine what is right. I used to think that people should be able to tell what is right and wrong on their own but as I have grown up and seen more of the world I am beginning to realize that sometimes people don't understand. I now think that it has a lot to do with up bringing and education. People value things and make choices based on what they know. Education is key to building a population with a holistically understood moral system that correlates with ethics, in my opinion. But my opinion is yet again based on my morals and thus may or may not be universally excepted as true and
