Summary Of Monica Petit Case

Improved Essays
I would like to bring to your attention an ongoing issue that has been occurring with Monica Petit. Usually I am able to excuse or ignore her behavior but am no longer able to do so since she has demonstrated no level of professionalism or respect for her fellow peers and particularly toward me. I have witnessed Monica on several occasion display a bad attitude toward staff and I find that I am unable to approach her on a personal level to address her behavior. On June 20, 2015 at about 2130 Monica was notified that her patient was requesting to go to the hospital. After returning from a smoke break with Christine, Monica then notified me and asked me to speak to the patient. Not knowing anything about the patient, I asked Monica to assess …show more content…
Usually I am able to fulfil my duties as a nurse no matter what conflict I am facing, but in this situation doing so was extremely difficult. In this situation, due to unnecessary conflict, patient care was delayed which is unfair to the patient and more importantly puts the patient’s health at risk. For this reason, I feel that this issue should not be ignored. Both Christine and Monica were extremely inappropriate and unprofessional. The situation could not be handled appropriately away from the patient care area because both nurses repeatedly refused to talk privately in the med room. Due to this I was subjected to bullying as both Christine and Monica talked to me disrespectfully and in appropriately in front of other staff and patients. Because the entire situation played out in the hallway and at the nurse’s desk there are several witnesses. The witnesses that I can recall being present are the following: Rachel, Kimberly Hockman, Michelle, and Kendra Johnson. I later attempted to approach Monica again in a professional manner and Monica continued to refuse to go in the medication room with me to talk but proceeded to yell at me at the nurse’s station making several accusation that were untrue. She then went down short hall to the nurse Christine who was giving report to Mary Rudolph and said “now she’s yelling at me again”. I then stated to Monica that I am not yelling and at this point Monica …show more content…
I did not witness this confrontation but was told that Monica, Kendra, and Christine were yelling at each other. I also witnessed Monica yelling at Kara on 6/12/15 who was 11-7 supervisor at the time. This behavior by both Monica and Christine is insubordination and should result in a clinical education or write up. It is clear that Monica is unaware of her duties as a cart nurse and the duties of the desk nurse and that she lacks respect for her peers. I have witnessed Monica become argumentative toward other supervisors particularly Jennifer Barille, Kara Rancourt, and several CNA’s for example Kim Hockman. In addition to this, Monica and Christine’s habit of leaving the floor together to take smoke breaks no less than 2-3 times throughout the shift should also be addressed. With Christine being a new nurse it is imperative that this in addition to inappropriate behavior be addressed with her in order to prevent further incidences of insubordination that may ultimately result in harm to our patients. If any further information is needed to address this situation, I would be happy to clarify or further explain what happened that day along with other incidence I have

After choosing scenario number three, I determined there was no conflict of principles or values in regards to me making the right decision. The nurse was in violation of hospital policy and in violation of HIPPA, which requires me to report the situation for patient safety. I would report what I saw to the charge nurse, instead of approaching the senior nurse and possibly having the situation become hostile. The ANA provision that mainly applies to the situation would be provision 3.1, which is the protection of the rights of privacy and confidentiality of the patient. The nurse violated this provision by looking in the chart of the patient in order to learn why the patient sought care.…

On Saturday, May 12, 2018, at approximately 12:31PM, I, Officer Larry Thomas was dispatched to the New Patient Tower, (room E.421), in reference to a patient control. Upon arrival, I observed a black male subject who was identified as Durell Childers walking around the room talking to himself looking around. I asked, Mr. Mac Mcneil the patient nurse what happened. Mr. Mcneil stated that the patient took the picture frame down from the wall that was inside his room, so he went inside the room to see what was wrong. Mr. McNeil was trying to talk with this subject to get the picture frame back, so he could put the picture frame back up on the wall.…

Introduction The workplace should be a safe environment. An employee should have the ability to start their day with a fresh mindset and complete their duties to the best of their abilities. When negativity enters an individual’s psyche, their performance will change. “Lateral violence, also known as nurse-to-nurse violence or bullying, is disruptive behavior that interferes with effective health care communication and thus threatens a culture of patient safety.”…

However, matters did worsen and once again she did not inform her nurse managers or other staff of the situation. At a time where it would have been lucrative to pull the staff together, CNO Jones opted on establishing an individual approach to correct the problem. As well as instituting the new policies with the understanding all staff would comply, in absence of a shared…

2).Moreover, horizontal violence has an impact on patient care and would likely be the cause of errors and mistakes (Anderson,2011,p.28) and would be the reason for ineffective communication , thereby, compromising the patient’s safety (Granstra,2015,p.254). I also believe that as graduate registered nurses, they should be familiar with professional boundaries and their scope of practice , to avoid role confusion that results to fertile background for bullying, harassment and miscommunication regarding division of responsibilities (Eagar, Cowin,Gregory,& Firtko, 2010,p. 94).For me, I have often wondered how should I respond to situations where lateral violence is present. I also thought about what appropriate actions should I take if this happens to me or to my co-workers. From the discussions and the strategies we developed in the toolkit (Appendix A) .…

This is uncivil behavior that needs to be changed in order to maintain a healthy work environment. This is described in Stopping the Culture of Workplace Incivility in Nursing when the author states, “Nurses will have to work together to ensure that communication between veteran nurses, new graduates or novice nurses, and other members of the healthcare team is collegial, respectful, and helpful” (Khadjehturian, 2012, p. 639). This illustrates how without the respect and civil behavior occurring throughout all members of the healthcare team, that proper patient care is unable to be performed. Although the actions of one individual seem to be…

Your response to Exercise 21.9 was different than mine, but I liked how you handled the situation. The way the patient was talking to the young nursing assistants is not okay. As nurses it is our job to respect and take care of every one of our patients, but when you have someone unruly like this it would be extremely difficult. I agree with you that avoiding the problem is not going to solve the issue. “The greatest problem in using avoidance is that the conflict remains, often only to reemerge at a later time in an even more exaggerated fashion” (Marquis & Huston, 2015).…

This week’s reading made me introspect about my personal opinions and emotions during crucial conversations. Honestly, I was taken aback when Patterson Grenny, McMillan, and Switzler(2012) discussed we, ourselves are the reason to create emotions that upset us (frustration, anger, fear, and insult). Further, the authors discuss that once these emotions are created we either act on them or be acted on by them (p.104). Last week, I faced a not-so-pleasant situation with one of the certified nursing assistant(CNA) in my facility.…

The two incivility showed are aggressive speech (what he shouted to the IV therapist) and Discrimination (in the case of patient’s ethnicity) and the crowd laughing while the chief spoke unethical talk. Incivility is the failure to deal with courteous (Makely, Austin, & Kester, 2013, p. 78). Either the chief resident or the junior residents along other students went through incivility way. At least they had to think about who they deal with. Even if the IV therapist had mistakenly talked (as the chief along his crowd assumed) to the comatose patient, it is unethical to yell to another health professional.…

This week in clinical, me and another nursing student were assigned to go and visit the PACU. All patients are admitted to the PACU, Post-anesthesia care unit, following surgery. We visited the PACU in the first week of clinical, so I was familiar with the environment. When I first walked into the PACU it was empty, but the nurse told me just give it a few minutes it is going to get busy. I was assigned to be with a nurse for the day and observe how she takes care of patients after surgery is completed.…

Nurses spend more time with the patient and family members than any other care provider in the hospital. In such situation, poor communication can lead to such events. The NSW code of conduct (Code of conduct 2015) #4.1 stated that we should promote a positive work environment with a collaborative work approach and productive working relationship. Also, NMBA Standard #1 (NMBA Standards 2016) states that we need to think critically and analyses nursing practice.…
