Avoidance: Solving Conflict Among Young Nursing Assistants

Decent Essays
Your response to Exercise 21.9 was different than mine, but I liked how you handled the situation. The way the patient was talking to the young nursing assistants is not okay. As nurses it is our job to respect and take care of every one of our patients, but when you have someone unruly like this it would be extremely difficult. I agree with you that avoiding the problem is not going to solve the issue. “The greatest problem in using avoidance is that the conflict remains, often only to reemerge at a later time in an even more exaggerated fashion” (Marquis & Huston, 2015). I would assume that if avoidance was used the patient may act the same way just to a different pair of nurses. Taking the time to talk to the patient about his actions I

After choosing scenario number three, I determined there was no conflict of principles or values in regards to me making the right decision. The nurse was in violation of hospital policy and in violation of HIPPA, which requires me to report the situation for patient safety. I would report what I saw to the charge nurse, instead of approaching the senior nurse and possibly having the situation become hostile. The ANA provision that mainly applies to the situation would be provision 3.1, which is the protection of the rights of privacy and confidentiality of the patient. The nurse violated this provision by looking in the chart of the patient in order to learn why the patient sought care.…

In the critical thinking assignment there is an oncology unit staffed with a charge nurse Sherry, a new hire licensed nurse James, and a nursing assistant in nursing school Julie all assigned to care for nine patients. The scenario we are asked to review is Sherry delegated a task to James to complete for a radical mastectomy patient that is nonverbal to James, the nurse assigned to her. The key issues to consider when delegating and assigning care to a patient are that the five rights to delegation are properly meet. Those five rights are the right task, right circumstances, right person, right communication, and right supervision (Huber, 2014). To effectively delegate a task the charge nurse must be aware that the knowledge and…

Nurses can learn from this incident and enhance patient care. For example, Zahedi et al. (2013) indicate that nurses are entirely responsible for providing high-quality healthcare and listening to the needs of patients. In the process, they should remain alert to any issues that patients may have and ensure that patients stay free from any form of abuse. Zahedi et al.…

This situation represents an interpersonal conflict among the two female Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) who have twenty years’ experience each, and the new CNA who is still in the nursing school (Harr, 2013). Some of the obvious causes for the conflict is the generational difference, he is full of energy and provides an excellent nursing care, and soon will be graduating to be a nurse (Harr, 2013). This could lead to another conflict which is a financial issue, the two CANs will realize that soon he will be making more money they do, which will lead to losing the enthusiasm to work harder as evidenced by the fact that they are always hanging around the nursing station instead of rounding on their patients, consequently the quality of work…

Work sometimes can get very busy while taking care of different patients. Always ensure that you are not leaving worksheets or paperwork in any patient’s room even if it belongs to that patient. Confidentiality can be breached for example on a busy schedule, a nurse taking care of two different patients may forget another patient’s discharge paper work in another patient’s room and that patient may read that information and thus confidentiality is breached. Nurses should also always check arm bands, because there could be two patients with the same last name and information may go to someone else that it’s not intended…

The first ineffective non-verbal technique demonstrated was shown by the Registered Practical Nurse. Appearance was shown to be an issue with the RPN. The way the team members dressed had to be professional attire and respectable so that the patient and family knows you are there to listen and actually care about the concerns they had. The RPN had not taken off their jacket. This non-verbal cue demonstrated to the patient and family member that the RPN most likely did not want to be there or care about the concerns associated the issues at hand.…

When asked to describe nurses, the public may use words such as “kind”, “caring” and “healing”; however a peek behind the curtain of a career that requires so many positive attributes, may lead to the discovery of behaviors that go against the ethical duties of nursing. This troublesome issue is commonly known as horizontal violence. Horizontal Violence may be defined as ““hostile, aggressive, and harmful behavior by a nurse or group of nurses towards a coworker or group of nurses via attitudes, actions, words and/or behaviors” (Becher, & Visovsky, 2012). Other words used to refer to this issue include “lateral violence”, “bullying” or “nurses eating their young”. This behavior is of increasing interest because all nurses are susceptible to…

Introduction Reflection is a process which involves thoroughly examining one’s experiences. It is an essential attribute within the field of nursing which can contribute to the development of practice by enriching clinical knowledge (Caldwell & Grobbel, 2013). Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on an event that took place during my clinical placement at St. Joseph’s Hospital where I experienced complications with a patient adhering to her medication regimen. This incident provided an opportunity for self-reflection that encourages growth in my future practice, ultimately improving my care towards patients. Look Back/Elaborate During my second semester working on the general medicine unit, I was assigned to care for a patient…

Nurses spend more time with the patient and family members than any other care provider in the hospital. In such situation, poor communication can lead to such events. The NSW code of conduct (Code of conduct 2015) #4.1 stated that we should promote a positive work environment with a collaborative work approach and productive working relationship. Also, NMBA Standard #1 (NMBA Standards 2016) states that we need to think critically and analyses nursing practice.…
