First of all it is important to give a definition of what human trafficking is. The phenomenon of trafficking in persons is in effect a form of modern slavery.
Compared to the so-called historical slavery, this new slavery has completely different structures: nowadays, slavery is mainly illegal, while once it was lawful and tolerated. To understand how and where trafficking is taking place research has to focus on a specific sector, with a defined theme and target and in small scale, as there is a strong need for analytical studies based on experience.
The fight against human trafficking has started with battles driven by activists and consequently activists have captured media, public and politicians attention on the topic (Laczko & Gozdziak, 2005).
This is certainly a positive aspect, but at the same time researchers are struggling to keep up with their work. In response to this massive media attention on the phenomenon, policy makers require documentations in order to allocate funding and policies implementation.
It is difficult to recognise trafficking acts and separate them from other crimes. Moreover, researchers struggle to get heard and, as a consequence they don’t have a say on strategies and people’s idea, in the same way activism actions
