Conflict Theory On Human Trafficking

For sociologists to make sense of life they use a framework called theory. A theory can be defined as a statement that explains how some parts of the world fit and work together. It also helps sociologists understand how different things are associated with one another. Sociologists use three major theories which include functional analysis, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Each theory provides a different perspective in which sociologists can look at how people interact with one another. This paper will be focusing on the social issue of human trafficking and will be analyzed and interpreted through the conflict theory. The conflict theory was developed by Karl Marx. The theory is a macro-level theory which means it looks at the big picture. Karl Marx came up with the conflict theory because he saw that there was a big gap between the working classes. There were the bourgeoisie which can also be called the “haves” and the proletariats which can also be called the “have nots”. They target people that are affected mainly by poverty, oppression, social instability, corruption, and military conflict. Many victims of human trafficking (proletariats) are poor and may even lack a good education. This makes them extremely vulnerable to human trafficking. The promise of money, a place to live, or even food can get people involved in human trafficking. Apart from the lack of money, human trafficking victims lack power. The fact that they do not have money makes them poor which also makes them feel helpless and stuck. They might even feel that they have no way out of their situation. Human trafficking victims also do not have many connections which might also be the cause of their feeling of helplessness. Without connections it is harder for victims to find help and find a way out of their troubling
