At first, players weren 't allowed to bounce the ball. They had to either shoot or pass it. This rule is similar to the "speed football" of today. In 1901, the rule of no bouncing the ball was eliminated and to replace it, the rule that players could only bounce the ball once was added to the list of rules. Even thought people could dribble, after the dribble, they had to pass and couldn 't shoot the ball. Although, player found the lope hole that they could dribble once by do it repeatedly. This wasn 't changed until 1909 when consecutive dribble and shots off the dribble was allowed. This is very similar to the crossover but is only done with one hand. When an offender wants to fake going one way he bounces the ball where he would for a crossover but uses the bouncing hand to retrieve the ball and take it back to the original position.
