The only sounds radiating from the nearly empty gym court were the dribbling of a ball against the hard wooden floor and the occasional swish or clank of the hoop. Sweat drenched my red shirt, staining it a dark shade of maroon, and the shoelaces of my Nike Air Jordans were becoming undone, but I barely noticed as I continued to practice that Kyrie Irving move I saw during the 2013 All-Star Rookie-Sophomore game: cross between the legs, behind the back, in and out, cross left, step back, and shoot. Nothing but net.
A quick thought crossed my mind. Did I have something important to do soon? Oh yeah, the AIME. My math teacher told me I had studied enough for it, so I should just relax and keep my head clear for the next few days. What better way to do that than shoot some hoops for a couple of hours?
I love basketball. Simple as that. I relish every aspect of it. I’ve always believed that true happiness is achieved in being completely immersed in the moment: neither living in the past nor worrying about the future. However, to entirely embrace the moment takes

I can set up my defender with a chess-like mindset without consciously planning out anything--first move pump fake, next move fadeaway--my mind simply knows what to do. All my practice has culminated at that point. And those days where you just can’t miss; man, there is nothing more exhilarating. When you’re shooting with perfect form every time, the sensation feels like the most natural thing you could do, as if you were born to do this. You pull up from 3-4 feet behind the arc, the ball goes through without even touching the rim and the most invigorating part is that you knew the shot was good the second it left your

One specific example of this took place during my freshman year of high school. This by far is one of my biggest regrets to this day. Who would ever think that not trying during my freshman year would continue to follow me throughout the course of my academic career.…

We stumbled one by one onto the ice. the cold air immediately stung my cheeks and numbed my toes. The other players were warming up; effortlessly weaving through cones and performing crossovers with such ease that it looked as if they were dancing the waltz in a ballroom, swiftly gliding back and forth, making sharp and precise turns, before lining up to practice shooting. A wrist shot, a snapshot, a slapshot a -the nets not over there -shot. In the locker room, everyone boasted to each other; “five goals seven assists.”…

That was embarrassing I love the game of basketball, even when I score in the other team’s basket. In my defense, I was only six years old and it was my first time being on a basketball team. Me and my older brother Houston were on the same team, and at the time we were losing by seven or eight points and there was hardly any time left in the game, maybe a second or two. I was always the smallest kid on the court…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

There is a place that everyone retreats to, that generates them relaxation and pure happiness. My sanctuary was plainly the basketball court. Once I arrive at the gym, I get hit in the face with the chilling breeze of the full blast air conditioning they had on, which would make you want to put on a jacket. To get to the court I had to walk through to two gigantic black heavy doors, generating me to exert all the force I had to pry it open. Arriving onto to the court my nose begins to go numb to the horrific smell of must collected by all the player’s sweat, causing me to cringe.…
