Personal Narrative: My First Day At My Internship Experience

Today was my first day at my internship at Vermont Sports Medicine. I observed Deb. I saw many different patients who had all had different types of personalities, and many different type of injuries. It was interesting to me to hear how they performed their injuries, and how they deal with the pain. I also saw many techniques that she performed on them such as using hot pads, taking sonograms, and evening looking at x-rays. One thing that I really liked was how unique each patient was. I also got to see patients that did things that they were not supposed to. One patient did not listen to what Deb told him and reinjured his bicep. This made it so he had to get surgery again, and begin is therapy from step one. I also liked how she kept me involved. I got to see how she made splints. On downtime I washed tables, she showed me how to do laundry, and where to equipment if she ran out. I also saw patients that had nerve damage, which she would treat differently than people who broke something. It was interesting to me to see all the different things she used with the …show more content…
I really enjoy seeing the progress some of the patients have made. Today we saw the boy who broke his arm on a dirt bike. He is only 17, so it is really interesting to look at his x-rays. It is interesting to see the progress he has made. After looking at his x-rays you can see that he is still healing. Deb keeps stressing how important it is for him not to ride, because it would be very easy for him to break his arm again. He has admitted to riding again, because it is his passion. Also he is graduating from high school. You see even at his age the struggles he has to deal with since he broke his arm. Since he can’t be in Georgia training for the nationals he planned on working as a landscaper. Deb does not think that this will be a good idea, because his injury is still very new and has a lot of healing to

Multiple times a week she meets with the counselors and the clinical coordinator to determine the patients to be discharged, difficult cases, stressors in employees lives, and the impact on the casework this demonstrates her relational actions. An internship is normally a work task a student completes after a series of classes to gain a degree in a particular field they think they’ll love, whether they still love it after they’ve completed that journey is based upon a multitude of criteria. Luckily, I have found that I quite enjoy fashion and working in retail throughout this internship at Dress Barn. Occasionally students find that what they thought they were getting into, is actually completely different than what they expected. Especially when reading about a profession on paper versus seeing it up closer in real life. When I started college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study or achieve with my life.…

One aspect of my life that separates me from others is my involvement in collegiate athletics. I competed in wrestling at both the Division I and Division III levels. Through wrestling, I have obtained a large amount of experience that will help me in physical therapy school. One of the greatest American wrestlers and coaches of all time, Dan Gable, once said, “Once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”…

Afterwards, we did a reach exercise, where the patient had to reach and take the cones away from Mrs. Wallace and give them to me. I observed another patient play with moldable putty that had tiny objects in it. They had to use their fingers and trying to pull the objects out to increase strength in their hands and fingers. I got to observe Mrs. Wallace help a patient with her shower, which was neat, because I never thought that it would be a part of what an OTA performs. I had a great learning experience at Crystal Oaks and it really showed me, that I really want to be an OTA!…

My recurrent shoulder dislocations were a constant battle, but a battle in which I’d always won. After a dislocation, all it took was a couple weeks of physical therapy before I could return to the baseball field. Although, after my fifth dislocation I ended up sitting in the hospital awaiting the results of my MRI with an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. My surgeon soon returned with news that my injury required a season-ending surgery. Thus, I had a Bankart Repair on my throwing shoulder, and afterwards, although devastated, I supported my teammates from the sidelines for the entirety of the season.…

As I walked into the small building, that in fact looked very enormous at the time, I began to anticipate every answer I would give to the person who interviewed me, so that to them, I would at least seem prepared. Although I had practiced my interviewing skills that very morning, I felt anxious and worried. Not knowing what to expect, many different scenarios ran through my mind, all of which weren't making my situation any better. Questions after questions were asked, all which seemed impossible for me to answer, and I felt as though I blew the whole thing. After the interview, many days passed by, and I had convinced myself that I did not get job.…
